State Leaders to Explore "What's Next" at CSG National Conference

LEXINGTON, Ky.—With the election over and facing a new biennium, state leaders across the country are looking for ways to address the continuing problems wrought by the Great Recession and the pending fiscal cliff at the federal level. The Council of State Governments’ 2012 National Conference, set for Nov. 29 to Dec. 3 in Austin, Texas, will offer state leaders thought-provoking sessions on cutting-edge solutions to those challenges.
With a theme of “What’s Next?”, sessions are focused on providing state leaders insights and information they will need to navigate the future.
“The challenges facing the states are complex and the issues state leaders must address are daunting,” CSG Executive Director/CEO David Adkins said. “For nearly 80 years, state leaders have looked to The Council of State Governments to serve as a catalyst for finding solutions.”
Session highlights include:
“What’s Next for Health Exchanges?”—The CSG Health Policy Task Force will examine exchange planning and implementation efforts, looking at issues for both state-based and federally facilitated approaches, including partnerships.
“Balancing Costs, Benefits of Medicaid Programs”—State leaders who have studied the questions surrounding expanding Medicaid will share their analyses during this session sponsored by the CSG Health Policy Task Force.
“The Fiscal Cliff and the States”—Barry Anderson, deputy executive director of the National Governors Association, will lead a discussion about the potential impact of the fiscal cliff on the states and the prospects for action to forestall it.
“State Revenue Outlook 2013 and Beyond”—Fiscal experts will describe policy options to help smooth out the unevenness in state revenue inflows and evaluate efforts to bolster public pension plans.
