'Big Seven' Associations Announce State and Local Legal Center Executive Director

WASHINGTON, D.C..—The executive directors of the Big Seven state and local associations are pleased to announce Lisa Soronen as the new executive director of the State and Local Legal Center (SLLC).
SLLC serves as a collective advocate for state and local governments before the United States Supreme Court and works to advance awareness of the significance of federalism issues in the courts. In its almost 30 year history, SLLC has filed more than 300 briefs in the Supreme Court that raise important questions for state and local governments.
“SLLC allows state and local governments to convey our perspectives with a unified voice to the federal judiciary and plays a crucial role in their advocacy,” said Bill Pound, executive director of the National Conference of State Legislatures “Hiring Lisa is a critical step in reestablishing the State and Local Legal Center as one of the most respected authorities on federalism issues.”
“Lisa’s extensive experience with the Supreme Court ensures the interests of local governments will be well represented,” said Donald J. Borut, executive director of the National League of Cities. “Her leadership will help advance SLLC’s reputation within the legal community.”
Soronen has served as senior staff attorney for the National School Boards Association, staff counsel for the Wisconsin Association of School Boards and clerked for the Wisconsin Court of Appeals. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Wisconsin Law School and holds a bachelor's in business administration from the University of Central Michigan.
“The SLLC provides a means for state and local governments, acting together, to offer the Supreme Court a wider perspective than a single city, county or state could provide,” said Soronen. “I am pleased to join the SLLC and look forward to our work.”
The SLLC has been overseen since its founding in 1983 by the Big 7 organizations, which include the National Governors Association, the National Conference of State Legislatures, The Council of State Governments, the National Association of Counties, the National League of Cities, the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the International City/County Management Association.
