CSG, Kauffman Foundation Partner
on Policy Academy on Entrepreneurship

LEXINGTON, Ky.–The Council of State Governments and the Kauffman Foundation have partnered to present a special policy academy for state leaders focused on Strategies for Fostering Entrepreneurship. The policy academy will be held Sept. 18-19 in conjunction with the 2013 CSG National Conference in Kansas City, Mo.
The entrepreneurial spirit drives the economy forward, but bringing a new product or service to market can be a daunting prospect for innovators—from gaining access to capital to navigating the legal and regulatory landscape. State policies can hinder or foster that entrepreneurial spirit.
“The more state leaders know about entrepreneurs and the opportunities and challenges they face, the better they can create policies that pave the way for entrepreneurial success,” said Tom McDonnell, president and CEO of the Kauffman Foundation. “We applaud the CSG for dedicating this time to one of the most important issues states have today to grow their economies.”
Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon, the 2013 CSG president, knows the importance of creating an atmosphere conducive to entrepreneurs.
“Creating a climate where small businesses and entrepreneurs can turn cutting-edge ideas into good jobs for Missouri families has been a top priority of my administration,” he said. “By making government smaller, smarter and more business-friendly, we have helped make Missouri one of the best states in the nation for small business to start, grow and thrive.”
Nixon will give a keynote address during the CSG policy academy.
“I appreciate CSG for providing a forum for this important topic and look forward to a constructive discussion on how to help today’s startups become tomorrow’s success stories,” he said.
This policy academy will feature experts, practitioners and national thought leaders to explore state-based solutions for increased entrepreneurship.
Nixon and Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander will present keynote addresses during the policy academy. McDonnell, CSG Executive Director/CEO David Adkins and Kansas Sen. Jay Emler, the 2012 CSG chairman, will give welcoming remarks.
